Welcome to Quip + Slack! We’re excited that you’re here. Quip is a new way to work with your team that combines docs, spreadsheets, and messages in one place to help teams work better together.
Here’s a detailed overview of our Slack integration.
Create, share, and stay updated
Quip is now connected with your favorite team chat platform. Add Quip’s living documents to your Slack channels now. Here’s how:
1. Securely preview links to Quip docs in Slack channels
It’s simple. Paste a Quip document link into a public Slack channel. Then, type enter to share it:

Your link will automatically transform into a document preview.

Posting a private document in a public slack channel
If you post a link to a Quip doc that’s not shared with everyone, @quip will send you a direct message in Slack where you can define the sharing permissions of your Quip doc.

In your 1-1 message with @quip, you can decide if you want to enable link sharing for the Quip document. This means that anyone with the link who also has a Quip account associated with your company will be able to view the document. Any colleague who doesn’t have a Quip account associated with your company can easily create one.

When you click ‘Yes, enable shared link’, you’ll receive confirmation that @quip has ‘enabled a shared link' for your Quip document. Anyone in the Slack channel can now view the doc in Quip.

2. Receive notifications in Slack channels when Quip docs change
If you want to stay in the loop on your team’s progress in Quip, it's simple. Get notified in Slack when a Quip document (shared in a Slack channel) is updated.
To turn this on, go to the Quip doc preview and click the ‘Change’ link.

You’ll then jump to the Quip doc where you can modify the notification settings for the document.Previews of all updates make it easy to tell whether you need to jump into Quip and contribute.

When a teammate @mentions you in a Quip doc, your @mention notification in Slack will be highlighted yellow so it’s easy to see when someone needs your attention in Quip. For anyone who goes by different usernames in Slack and Quip, the integration will streamline things by converting the Quip username into equivalent Slack username.

3. Elevate ideas from Slack into Quip docs
Spark ideas in Slack and give them structure in Quip where you can organize, discuss, and evolve your team’s most important work. Use the slash command
/quip new
to create a document in Quip where your team can jump in together and get to work.Empty Image
Then type what you want the title of the document to be.

Quip docs created using the
/quip new
slash command automatically post updates into the channel where they were created to keep everyone in sync. To adjust updates, click “Change” in the document preview in Slack, then tune the sliders in Quip.Horizontal Rule
Add @quip to a private Slack channel
Assuming your awesome Quip + Slack admin followed the default set-up flow, @quip would have joined a set of public channels all at once. This starter pack of channels is designed to get your team off to a great start with the integration; as a result, document previews should “just work” most places. Private Slack channels are the exception. In order to get previews of Quip docs in private Slack channels, you’ll need to invite @quip manually so that it can pick up on Quip links as they’re posted.
Once you invite @quip into a private Slack channel, you’ll be able to see document previews there, create new Quip docs in context using the
/quip new
slash command, and receive notifications when Quip documents are updated, too.Type
/invite @quip
to invite Quip’s bot to your private Slack channel.Empty Image
Slack will then clarify that you actually want to invite @quip to your private channel. You do! So, just click “Yes, show channel history”. @quip only acts on new messages sent to the channel.

Congratulations! @quip is enabled for your private Slack channel and you and your private group have all the awesome integration features at your disposal.
